Remembering the Little Things

A couple of weeks ago I attended Justin & Mary’s lighting workshop (see pictures I already posted here). This particular blog post is to elaborate on a question Mary asked us at the very beginning of the evening. “Why do you do what you do?”

We had a bit of time to think about it that night, and right off the bat I wrote down these 3 blurbs:
“to remember the little things”  — “to remind you how that moment felt”  —  “to memorize every little detail”

Basically those three snippets can be summed up into the first one. Read on to see how.

Maybe we’re talking about something that’s physically small. A sticky-note that says “I love you”. Your wedding bands. Your newborn baby’s toes. A quarter your Grandpa pulled out of your ear.

Maybe to you it means moments that could potentially go unnoticed. A wink from your dad as he hands you off to your almost-husband. The quick wiping away of a tear. Your two-year-old baby girl hugging your leg.

Or maybe these “little things” are events that happen almost every day that you don’t even realize need remembering. Kids splashing each other during bath time. Grandma kissing Grandpa’s forehead. Snuggling your puppy on the couch. Baking cookies with your niece & nephew.

Whatever the term “little things” brings to your mind, we all have them.

My photography journey started because I wanted to remember my little things. The longs nights in my college’s design studio that then seemed so regular, but now that I miss so much. The first snow of the season covering the front lawn of my first apartment. Lazy Sundays with my boyfriend that soon-evolved into lazy Sundays with my husband. I started taking pictures of those “little” moments and now I can’t stop.

I so believe in preserving the little things. And I want to help you remember yours forever. That’s why I do what I do.

P.S. And in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’ll just say that I’m very THANKFUL for all those little things, too. They’re what make life interesting!
