The truth about family photos

I’m gonna be honest with you: I get pretty bummed when I see photo captions on social media that say things like “best attempt at a family photo” or “I wish we were all looking, but this was all I could get” or “Ahhh they never sit still!”

I want to encourage you about this subject. The truth about taking family photo is that it’s HARD! But you DID IT. And just because every single eye isn’t looking at the camera doesn’t mean that photo needs to be justified. It doesn’t mean “you tried”, it means you succeeded in capturing a silly, spontaneous moment of your kids, friends or family members doing the things they love.

You took photos (with an phone, by a professional, however) and YES! You loved one, and shared it! But what saddens me is the need for an explanation for why it’s not ‘perfect’. I truly understand that on social media it’s easy (and pretty normal, tbh) to want the moments you share to be perfect. I get it. But whatever made those eyes wander (plane, ice cream, laughing, crying, sleeping, tickling) – it’s life, it’s a moment, and those ARE good photos. Those are the real “remember that moment?” moments.

So please don’t be discouraged if you’re taking a family photo after brunch and all the prettiest smiles don’t quite make it in there. Or if all eyes are not looking right at the camera. Take the photo, and if you decide to share it, caption it with every colored heart emoji and every big smiley emoji and enjoy remembering that really real moment.
