You, Me + Coffee | A Typical Day

You, Me + Coffee is a weekly-ish series about random stuff happening in my life. You know, stuff I’d share if we were on a coffee date! Grab a cup and read along!

~*~

When I tell people I own my own business and work from home, usually the immediate reaction is “Cool! That must be fun! So… what do you do all day?” And that’s when I write a blog post about it.

The thing about the title is I really don’t have a “typical” day, but I’ll tell you a little bit about what happens most commonly throughout my days. I’d say this is a normal day, 3 out of 5 days a week. The other two days are reserved for spontaneity. And if I have the car, Target. 😉

My day begins when my husband’s alarm goes off, which could be any time between 6:30 to 8:00 depending on where his job has him working that week (auditor. goes where they need him.) He gets up, I stay in bed and peruse Instagram and Twitter (yeah I’m one of those people.)

30 minutes later I’m up and getting ready for a run. I make myself run in the morning because otherwise I’ll put it off until 2025.

I make it a point not to check my email or do any “work-y” things until 10 am. I picked 10 am because it gives me enough time to run, get ready, eat breakfast and spend quality time with Jesus – without feeling rushed. If I don’t do those “me” things each morning, the rest of my day seems stressful or just a little off. That’s one great thing about working for yourself, setting your own schedule. I mean, it has it’s pros and cons, but not working until 10 am is definitely a pro.

Anyways, so for most of my morning and afternoon I’m checking + replying to emails, social-media-ing the crap out of my blog post links, updating calendars, prepping and writing blog posts (for mine and 2 others), packaging orders and doing any other business-related tasks. I take a break around 2, eat lunch, and take my daily walk to the post office or bank (with a stop for coffee as well!) I HAVE to get outside, otherwise I’m literally at my desk (or on my couch) all day and that’s pretty lazy.

After my break it’s back to the grind! I save editing for the afternoon, because I love it, and after all of my other work is done, it’s kind of like a reward. I also make a point to have some “creative time” most days, whether that be doodling, calligraphy, reading, or working on “passion projects” (which right now is a magazine).

Evenings vary. If I’m not coaching, meeting clients, or shooting a session, I start dinner before Nate gets home. And now that summer is coming, walking to the ice cream shop around the corner will definitely become a part of our “usual”!

Working from home seems like all rainbows and glitter, but I’ll tell you, there are definitely days when I just can’t get into the swing of things. There isn’t enough coffee in the world to get the momentum going and my to-do list is pretty much doomed. Those are the days when it’s really hard to be working by yourself, with no built-in motivation from coworkers or friends. But the good definitely outweighs the bad. And apparently more people work from home than I thought, so we’re going to start a club. 😉

So that’s a little bit about my regular, old days!
