Coffee Shops are my Happy Place

February 26, 2013

Happy places come in many different forms. For some it may be the beach. Everyone loves the beach, right? For others it could be at the gym, gettin’ your adrenaline on. Or on the flip side, the spa, where you can get pampered and relax a little.

Coffee shops are my happy place. I’ll pick locally owned over ‘Bucks any day, but it doesn’t matter (though I do have my faves*.)

Why, when I’m feeling stressed, do I say to myself, I need to go get a coffee. Well, it’s not just about the coffee, although that’s a definite plus. For me it’s more about the peace. It’s about slowing down a little. Yeah, I love Dunkin’ when I’m on the go, but what I’d rather do is sit down and stay a while. I’d rather have my drink in a mug, my Bible on the table next to it. I’d rather be in a cozy atmosphere with the smell of fresh coffee everywhere, a smell that somehow makes so many good ideas start rumbling in my head. I’d rather people watch; see the mommas & their littles, the college kids living a life that not too long ago was mine, the old couple each with their daily news.

Last week I was able to sit for almost 40 minutes, which is a lot of resting time for a gal who always has to be “doing” something. I read my Bible, doodled a few favorite verses & daydreamed. By myself. And I was pretty happy.

P.S. Favorite shops I’d go to every time if I could:
in Beantown: Flatblack & George Howell (their latte pictured above)
in Keene: Prime Roast
in Syracuse: Cafe Kubal & Recess Coffee
