Picking Outfits for your Family Session

Families often ask “What should we wear to our session?” My main rule of thumb is make sure you’re all comfortable and are wearing clothes that fit well!

The “Pops of Color” Trick is my favorite.

The easiest way to create a coordinated, but not matchy-matchy, look is to pick one color and have everyone wear a little bit of it. The color could be in your accessories: a necklace, tie, shoes and headband. Or you could have the kids wear the most color, and parents keep their pieces on the more neutral side (or vice versa!)

My sessions usually air on the side of casual, but if your family likes to get dressed up, go for it! This “pop” trick can be used with any style, from casual to super fancy. Below is a more classic take on it, using blue as an overall color and red as their pop! (As you can see, Dad doesn’t have red in his outfit, but the red jeans are very vibrant and have enough color for both of them.)

Coordinating with your session location is another way to plan your outfits.

Sometimes SRP families have their session on a beach, or in the woods, or somewhere else that might have a specific style associated with it. If that’s the case, use the location as your inspiration. Light fabrics and colors are perfect for the beach, while moody colors or neutrals are great if we’re going to be in a nature-y place.
